Local sixth grader honors teacher who inspired him
TEMPE, AZ (April 12, 2007) - Eleven-year-old author Michael Moorehead has come up with a special way to honor the former second-grade teacher who encouraged him to become a writer.
At a school-wide assembly at Waggoner Elementary School in Tempe on Tuesday, April 24, Michael Moorehead, now a sixth grader, will present Nancy Lujan with an autographed copy of his newly published book, The Student from Zombie Island: Conquering the Rumor Monster.
"When I was in the second grade," says Michael, "Ms. Lujan was always encouraging me to write, even if it meant that I had to take a little longer with assignments." He wrote his first draft of the book when he was a student in Ms. Lujan's class.
I wanted to do something really special for her, so I decided to write a story and put her in it as one of the characters. And that's how I came up with idea for the book."
The Student from Zombie Island is an illustrated book which shows how outrageous rumors about a new student can begin to circulate throughout a school. The book, published by Little Five Star, a division of Chandler-based Five Star Publications, Inc., is available in all major bookstores. It even has its own website at www.ZombieIslandBooks.com.
NOTE: Waggoner Elementary is located at, 1050 E. Carver Road. The assembly will be held at 12:45 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room. Television media wanting to cover the event must get advance permission from Assistant Principal Lisa Gibson (480-783-1900).
