CHANDLER, AZ (January 2012) - In the genre of blockbuster films Ray, The Soloist, A Beautiful Mind, The Notebook and Field of Dreams, the novel by Dr. Nicolas Bazan, Una Vida, will soon become a major motion picture. Una Vida is the haunting story of a mesmerizing New Orleans street singer whose eerie past holds the key to renowned neuroscientist Dr. Alvaro Cruz's recurring dream and hunger for redemption. Stricken with Alzheimer's, Una Vida can only offer tantalizing clues to her past through her spellbinding vocals, incredible recollection of jazz lyrics and occasional verbal revisitings of a life that is quickly fading. Can Cruz make sense of the fragmented pieces before they are forever gone, and in the process give the woman closure on the greatest heartbreak of her life?
Una Vida is based upon the novel Una Vida: A Fable of Music and the Mind, published by Chandler, Arizona's Five Star Publications, Inc., and written by one of the world's premier neuroscientists, who as a young boy witnessed a beloved aunt suffer a seizure and vowed to spend the rest of his life studying the causes behind debilitating diseases of the brain in hopes of discovering therapies to slow or cure them.
The film's producers are Richie Adams, Dr. Bazan, and Brent Caballero. Adams, owner and creative director of River Road Creative (www.rrc.la) and the film's writer/director, says, "For me, writing the screenplay with Dr. Bazan has been an incredibly powerful experience, and I'm sure directing the film will prove no less moving…I can't wait to get started."
Caballero, the film's casting director, says, "Finding the talent for Una Vida will be one of the easiest jobs I've ever had. The script has so many powerful and engaging roles that will appeal to top-named actors."
Una Vida promises to be filled with delightful twists and unexpected turns, all centered around one of the greatest gifts New Orleans has offered the world - jazz. Until the movie's release, eager readers can satisfy their curiosity about Una Vida: A Fable of Music and the Mind, now available in paperback, by purchasing it through FiveStarPublications.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Amazon.com, or indiebound.org (ISBN: 978-1-58985-098-9, paperback, $15.95; ISBN: 978-1-58985-112-2, hardcover, $25.95), as well as on eStarPublish.com as an eBook.
Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Bazan recently delivered the Opening Plenary lecture, "The Challenge of Civilization: How to Protect the Mind," to the Hirnliga German Alzheimer's Association and Goethe-University Symposium, Alzheimer's Disease: New Perspectives on Therapeutic Targets and Pathways, Frankfurt, Germany. Dr. Bazan also received the "Guest of Honour" award presented by the Mayor of Torre di Ruggiero of the Ruggiero il Normanno City, Catanzaro, Italy. In recognition for his discovery of DHA neuroprotection signaling in Stroke, Alzheimer's, Macular Degeneration and Epilepsy, Dr. Bazan earned the Alkmeon International Prize." He was also recently honored with the Award for Outstanding Research on Neuroprotection in Age-Related Macular Degeneration, University of Catania, presented by Magnifico Rettore, university president, in Catania Italy.
"With the recognitions Dr. Bazan continues to receive in his field of expertise, it is only natural that his command for his subject lend to the realism presented in his fictional work, Una Vida," adds Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications, Inc.
