A dream of a bucolic life turned into a commitment to save animals
A series of new children's books will help fund the effort
Samuel Lopez and his wife Cheri were looking forward to an idyllic existence when they purchased a 100-year-old farm in northern California several years ago. What they did not anticipate was that strangers would soon begin dumping unwanted animals on their land.
"In the beginning, it only happened occasionally," says Samuel. "But as word spread that we were animal lovers, more and more people began bringing us their dogs and cats." These people offered a variety of reasons why they could no longer keep their pets.
All the animals were welcome, but soon there were too many. "We had to begin seeking permanent, loving homes for as many of them as we could," says Cheri.
They were spending so much of their time rescuing and rehabilitating these animals and then trying to find adoptive homes for them that Samuel and his wife established Compassionate Pet Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Over the years, the programs of Compassionate Pet Sanctuary have expanded to include low-cost spay and neuter services and a trap-neuter-return program to help control the number of feral cats in the area.
As the nation's economy slumped, the number of people relinquishing their companion animals has increased. "The number of animals we're getting continues to rise, but our financial base of contributors is shrinking," says Samuel.
Samuel has authored four real-life stories about some of the animals they've rescued, and the proceeds from the books will go directly to Compassionate Pet Sanctuary. Written and illustrated for children, they are scheduled for release in the fall of 2009
