'Rattlesnake Rules' Wins 2010 Glyph Award, Finalist Nod
CHANDLER, AZ (May 4, 2010) - The most prestigious honor the Arizona Book Publishing Association (ABPA) awards for excellence in publishing, the Glyph, went to Rattlesnake Rules by Conrad Storad for "Best Cover Design-Children/Young Adult." In addition, Rattlesnake Rules was a Glyph finalist - ABPA's equivalent to being nominated for an Oscar by the Academy of Motion Pictures - in the "Children-Fiction" category.
Any book produced by an Arizona publisher, written by an Arizona author, written about Arizona or set in Arizona was eligible to enter, making Rattlesnake Rules a two-time standout in a very competitive contest.
Rattlesnake Rules, a product of Five Star Publications, demystifies the world of rattlesnakes and introduces children to such topics as who, when and what rattlesnakes eat. Readers learn fascinating facts such as why rattlesnakes have rattles, what it means when they shake their rattles, how the snakes' forked tongues help them survive and other interesting rattlesnake factoids. In addition, the whimsical, colorful illustrations of Nathaniel P. Jensen, who also designed the cover, help bring Storad's story alive.
Storad, a multi award-winning author, is Arizona's most popular writer of science and nature books for young readers with more than 30 titles to his credit. The former director of Arizona State University's Office of Research Communications, now retired, uses his friendly demeanor and infectious sense of humor to entertainingly educate - or "edu-tain" - children through his writing and during school visits.
