Tzedakah is a age-old custom of collecting money and sharing it with those in need. This act of kindness and compassion can be traced back to the Old Testament. The money is placed in a tzedakah box until it is distributed to those who can benefit from it the most.
Tzedakah is commonly (and mistakenly) referred to as charity. Tzedekah, however, is the Hebrew word not for charity, but for righteousness.
Acts of charity, as good as they are, are often deeds done out of conscience, out of wanting to do something to help someone less fortunate. In other words, acts of charity are often done when the mood strikes us, when we are motivated to do something for someone else.
Acts of tzedakah are regarded as the right—or just—thing to do regardless of how we might feel.. "Tzedek, tzedek you shall pursue," (Deuteronomy 16:20). Tzedekah has universal appeal, crossing all religious lines and is as applicable to the elderly as it is to youngsters. For Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and others, for young and old, what better message to impart than one of active compassion?
