Five Star Publications puts young authors on radar at Book Expo America
Like a small quasar in a vast universe, Five Star Publications shines bright with stellar authors, such as Elizabeth Daniels Squire, who wrote Kill the Messenger; actor Alex Cord, writer of the 2007 Glyph Award recipient A Feather in the Rain; and 14-time book author Shari Cohen of Alfie's Bark Mitzvah. Five Star's books offer plenty of star power, too, like the prized GUNSMOKE: An American Institution, Legends in the Kitchen: Celebrity Recipes for a Cause and Girl Talk by Gigi Garner, which contains tips by Jamie Lee Curtis, Naomi Judd and Shari Belafonte, among others. However, it's this award-winning publisher's rising young stars that are garnering it astronomical attention these days.
Five Star Publications is becoming known for "creating the bestselling authors of tomorrow by nurturing the young writers of today" - first by publishing the works of child authors and second by sponsoring Kids Can Publish University.
Twinkle little stars
Five Star Publications beams with pride at having launched the writing careers of young award-winning authors: Michael Moorehead, the incredible 12-year-old creator of The Student from Zombie Island; Dylan Peters the astounding 9-year-old who wrote Tic Talk: Living with Tourette Syndrome; and 17-year-old Elizabeth Golden, author of When Life Throws You a Curve, who recently started her freshman year at Yale and serves as the co-spokesperson for the National Scoliosis Foundation. Dylan and Michael will both sign books during Book Expo America. Check your program for times, or visit Five Star Publications at booth #753.
Kids Can Publish University (KCPU), which can be viewed at www.KidsCanPublish.com, promotes literacy and a love for writing and illustrating through free monthly contests that reward winners with a published byline. Children in grades one through nine can enter writing or drawing assignments they've already done for their classrooms or create something new for the contest, and they can enter as often as they wish. Each month, KCPU selects pieces in each age division to publish online. Only the very best entries are published, making it an honor to be chosen. Winners also receive Kids Can Publish: Write on! wristbands. In addition, KCPU offers grant-writing information to teachers, school workshops and a bookstore.
"The teachers in my building are always looking for places to showcase their student's work. Your contest highlights the importance of creativity in writing and art, " says Libby Kahn, library media specialist at Nesaquake Middle School in St. James N.Y. "In this age of technology, it will be very exciting to be published online. "
Publishing support
Five Star Publications is a place any author would feel comfortable calling home, offering traditional publishing, the ever-popular partnership publishing programs, economical self-publishing assistance plans and self-publishing straight up.
The success of Five Star books revolves around quality design and publication, and a cosmic public relations and marketing program developed by Five Star Publications owner Linda Radke, recipient of "Book Marketer of the Year " by Book Publicists of Southern California and author of Promote Like a Pro and The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing. Unlike some authors that seem to disappear into a black hole after being published by larger publishers, Five Star authors receive ongoing, individualized attention.
"Linda Radke and her staff at Five Star Publications have not only helped increase sales of our books through their relentless publicity, they have also been responsible for us acquiring numerous speaking engagements and television and radio interviews. Their tireless efforts on behalf of their clients have resulted in our books being sold in every state and twelve different countries, " attests Tom Lambke, coauthor with son Bryan, of I JUST AM ... a Story of Down Syndrome Awareness and Tolerance.
World-class books
Not to be eclipsed by the services of Five Star Publications, is its galaxy of books, which in addition to previously mentioned titles include historical greats like Clint Frederick's World War II: A Legacy of Letters - One Soldier's Journey; westerns like Gayle Martin's Luke & Jenny series, Charlie LeSueur's Riding the Hollywood Trail and Tom Gill's The Misadventures of a Roving Cartoonist: The Lone Ranger's Secret Sidekick; mystery thrillers like Dr. John Luck's Diamonds of Death, cookbooks including Cherie Kimmons' Potluck Survival Guide and Sybil Ruth Kaplan's Kosher Kettle; and the lighthearted The Secret Life of a Snowbird by Len Schritter; all of which will be on display during BEA.
