One in five Americans is functionally illiterate according to the National Coalition for Literacy, and two-thirds of those lacking basic language skills were born in the United States, with English being their native language! Consider the long-term affect these statistics will have on your company and the country as a whole. How does it impact the quality of potential employees, sales and ability to compete with foreign companies?
It’s time to commit to improving the literacy benchmark in the United States!
As a former teacher and publisher with 20-plus years of book publishing under my belt, I know children not only want to learn, they are eager to learn. I also know the key to education is keeping students excited about and involved in what they are learning. That's why Five Star Express Press is establishing a Kids Can Publish! Contest to encourage young people to write by offering them the grand prize of professionally printed and bound copies of stories and books they've created. For grades two through four, five winners will each receive 5 copies of an anthology containing the five winning stories, and for grades five and six, one student will receive 25 copies of his or her winning book.
We need your help to stamp out illiteracy! Five Star Publications is spearheading Kids Can Publish! as a national contest and underwriting much of the cost. However, to fully fund it, we are approaching a handful of progressive companies that have demonstrated a commitment to children and education to underwrite scholarships to aid with the balance of the expenses. For as little as $2,000 your company can bring the power of language and books to America's children. In return, your firm will be acknowledged in all publicity materials, known to schools around the country and recognized in the winning book's foreword.
If your company's budget can't afford to underwrite a full scholarship, any donated scholarship amount will be appreciated and acknowledged. The more scholarships we have, the more frequently the contest can be run; and the more contests we offer, the more children's lives are touched!

PRIZES:
Help Kids Can Publish University motivate young writers to continue to write often and to write well by providing rewards for our monthly winners. There will be at least four winners in each age category each month. The age categories are: Grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-9. Any donation you make will be greatly appreciated by Kids Can Publish University and our youth winners.
Remember, winners come from near and far, so prizes that are easily mailed and usable across different populations, such as gift certificates, music CDs, game DVDs and movie tickets work best.
At your request, we'll send you a list of winners to whom we've awarded the prizes your firm has donated.
