Freckles: The Mystery of the Little White Dog in the Desert is a true story written for children 5-11 years of age but with an appeal that will touch everyone who loves animals.
It tells of a dog abandoned in the desert who not only survives, but also manages to keep alive her six tiny puppies. They're eventually rescued and she goes on to become a pet therapy dog. Freckles now works with youngsters, many of whom come from backgrounds strikingly similar to her own.
A gentle, inspiring story, Freckles promotes not only a deeper appreciation for all animals, but also for each other.
The book contains an illustrated glossary of desert animals and plants mentioned in the book plus special sections with discussion topics for teachers and parents and information about adopting pets and about pet therapy.
"It is my hope that people of all ages will read this heartwarming book and then choose to do something to make the world a better place for our children and for our animals."
Tony La Russa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and founder of Animal Rescue Foundation
What teachers, administrators, and students are saying about our author (and dog!) talks ...
"We were very fortunate to have Paul Howey and Freckles visit with our students in grades K, 1, 2, and 3. The presentation was outstanding! The students loved hearing the book beforehand and then meeting Freckles in person. Mr. Howey interacted very well with the students and they enjoyed their time with him. His focus on caring, perseverance, and the important life skills in the book were a perfect tie-in with our work with students. I recommend his presentation to all grades. We're having him back to visit with grades 4 and 5 as well!"

He not only talks about how he rescued Freckles ... but he also shares with students that inspirations for writing can come to them any time and any place."
