What About A Pastor Who Increased His Congregation From 70 To Nearly 2000 Members In Ten Years?
Read LEADERSHIP UNBOUND: A Primer for Leaders and Entrepreneurs, by Lawrence W. Corbett and Jerre L. Stead to find out! LEADERSHIP UNBOUND explains in clear, simple to understand terms the ways in which a dynamic, forward thinking pastor created a successful new church community in the middle of the desert by applying business principles and how anyone can apply these lessons to their own success plan. When Corbett suggested they collaborate on a book to demonstrate the simple ways in which entrepreneurs in any field could develop a successful business, Stead agreed. As President and CEO of Ingram Micro in the late 1990's Stead developed the plan that lead the company to unprecedented growth, from $6 Billion USD to $30 Billion in four years. Stead, former senior executive at Honeywell, and former CEO of Square D, NCR, AT&T/GBCS and Legent, has co-authored two previous books with Jim Belasco. Soaring With the Phoenix, and Seize Tomorrow, Start Today, were both best sellers. LEADERSHIP UNBOUND: A Primer for Leaders and Entrepreneurs will be published in January by Five Star Publications. "Each day, when checking the mail, I introduced myself to shopkeepers. I did my homework," Corbett related. "I asked them specific questions about what they perceived as the needs in the community. Who were their customers? What changes had they observed in the community? Where did children go to school? Where did parents work?" As Larry said, he as a pastor lived the vision; he wore the robes and ministerial apparel. Yet he executed on the vision from the beginning as well, looking at the church start-up as a businessman," Stead added. "My objective was to make sure that they knew me. I also gained their support in spreading the word since local shop managers, clerks, and owners needed to know that a church was coming to the neighborhood when potential homeowners among their customers asked about the availability of churches," Corbett continued. "If they do not know, the risk of failure increases. If they did know, it was lowered. These people in turn were able to tell newcomers to the community about Pinnacle Presbyterian Church and where and when it held services." "Larry knew the only way he was going to make it was to attract top grade people - and take a new and different approach, a very entrepreneurial, effective one. It's important that a vision has the substance to stand the test of time, and the Pinnacle vision has had this from the start," Jerre remarked."Larry and his start-up team together created a vision and a plan which have stood the test of time for nearly 15 years. "A vision also needs to include a metric - a success measure. Larry and the Pinnacle core team agreed that the vision was about 'creating a suburban church with 1,500 - 2,000 members.' There are other ways to measure, but they set that down and executed it step by step to make it happen. The proof is in the execution: plan all you want to, but you then need to make it happen. What Larry has done with Pinnacle Presbyterian is similar to AOL (America Online). In 1990, it was 'a dot' - literally. Initially, Steve Case's brother told him that it would never happen, that he should forget it - go back and finish his education. Yet Steve had a vision - he said he believed there would be a good 10 million AOL users by the year 2000. He was a little off: they have 35 million. Think of that," Stead concluded. Stead parallels the development of Pinnacle Presbyterian with three start-up companies that began about the same time. He shares insights about what made GolfLogix, WorkWell Systems, and M.D. OnLine the successful companies they are today. He discusses what made the three companies and the church models for entrepreneurs everywhere. LEADERSHIP UNBOUND is a primer based on years of experience in Fortune 500 companies and Presbyterian congregations throughout the U.S. and the world. The goal of the book is to help others, whether they are ministering to the needs of people through a church, synagogue or mosque or by providing goods and services through a business, to reach the next level of entrepreneurial success more easily by applying the principles within.
